the signal

Latent Signal began, as many credible cultural initiatives do, in a living room — mid-conversation, low on certainty, high on conviction. It was a response to a simple observation: far too many people stop making things long before they stop wanting to. Somewhere between deadlines, practicality, and the slow erosion of confidence, those desires sink.

I'm Maddison — a sociologist by degree, photographer and writer by instinct, based in London. I founded Latent Signal during my time at the University of Bristol, and have edited it since its inception. The platform exists as an ongoing editorial space for photography, writing, cultural research and visual projects. It is where I think out loud, make things seriously, and document the culture I'm paying attention to.

Latent Signal operates entirely online; no physical barriers, no gatekeepers, no requirement to already be visible. It is open to contributors who have something they feel compelled to make.

The platform is collaborative by design. I seek to work with photographers, writers and emerging creatives whose skills and instincts have been quietly suppressed in the name of efficiency, employability or "realism." Photography, writing, research, image-making, and unfinished experiments are all welcome here. Polished outcomes are optional. Curiosity is not.

This is an independent creative platform. It is occasionally impractical, frequently unresolved, and very much worth the effort.
